Who Was the First Band You Saw at Scorgies?

Tell us about your first time at Scorgies.

Hipsterdufus says: “The first band I saw was King Juke. However, after that I was a regular both upstairs and down stairs. Thru the years i saw The Hi-Techs (Personal Effects), New Math, The Cliches, Hummer and The Machine (very funny), Meat Cleaver and the New Toys, B-Girls, Romeo Void,I can go on all night…….”

first band I saw at Scorgies was New Math. It was the 1st Scorgies show.

Stage too low, small sound & just track lights in the ceiling. Don’s original plan for live shows was ‘acoustic coffee house in the park gazebo’.

Conceptually, this was waaay ahead of its time in mixing the virtual reality of a fake park setting, (w/astro turf & benches & I think even small fake trees in buckets) and live music, plus a fully stocked bar within reach (when did you ever see THAT in a park?), all based in a dark gloomy basement.

Eventually he built a taller stage & put in lights. Then he had the Cramps play on the new higher stage & Lux wound up tearing out a chunk of the (now much closer) suspended ceiling. But thats a story for another day.

New Math, summer of ’80. I had just turned 18. Maybe the Clichés opened; it was either them or someone else. Downstairs was jammed with people. Just once and I was hooked on the place, the music, the crowd. My old high-school cronies I went down there with, they were not so much hooked. Very soon, I was hanging with a whole new scene.

    My 1st Scoriges visit!
Well Cousin Al and some of his buddies (Maybe Waldo, Victor Tabinski or Mysterious Ray). Took me to Scorgies. I was 17 and about 6 months from being 18 it was circa 1979. I had been waiting since I was 15 to go there!!!
I think The Hi-Techs were playing when we went in & I think we only saw part of the show. The Bowery Boys were next up. I remember the whole place going nuts dancing. It seamed that it wasn’t guys dancing with girls or girls with guys but everyone dancing to the great sounds together. This blew my mind! I know I had to play there or at least hang out as much as I could!
I was at every show I could go to! I saw the Heartbreakers, both Cramps shows (And yes the drums were tossed around!), The Go-Gos and many more .

It was Bat Magrath – but by mistake. We thought it was New Math that was playing and made it downstairs before we realized it was the wrong band. Want to say it was in 79 also – but who can remember.

First band I saw at Scorgies was Personal Effects. Well, technically, I saw it from the stage, as it was my first show playing with the band. It was January 23rd 1982. It was a packed house and, ironically, it was the most relaxed I’d ever been on a stage. I knew I was home. The story of how I joined the band will show up on the front page of the blog soon.

late 78 – early 79 would be my guess,
I can’t be more specific than that.

I was at the New Math show to but don’t remember the date. A bunch of us had been hanging at the bar for months prior when it was just the upstairs joint so we weren’t going to miss that first show.
And I agree with Bob- it was a very comfortable perch being up on that stage (i was up there that first night of his). Before I played there first (my first gig ever I think) with the hi-techs I had a bit of nervousness but Geoff from the Bowery Boys assured me it would go away as soon as we got going. I believed him and it did.
Ironically the Bowery Boys had a guitar player whose stage fright was so bad he would break out in hives and eventually had to stop playing out.

    Scorgies had live bands?
    What year?
All I remember was the booze and the broads.
